Georegistering autoCAD files for importing into a GIS

I mainly work with GIS, but I have AutoCAD 2008 on my computer as well, which I would like to use more.

I have been sent .dwg files by other people which import quite happily into the GIS, and appear in the right part of the world. I am trying to work out how I georegister (or georeference) my autoCAD files so they appear in New Zealand too. So far I have had everything appearing in outer space. If it was simply in the northern hemisphere that would be easy to fix, but I obviously have no idea.

Also the GIS requires that I assign a projection to everything I import, even in cases where no projection is necesesary (such as looking at the boundaries of a few farms - very large scale) it wants one. No matter what I assign, as soon as I try to put it together with something of the same projection, it's off off in outer space again.

I don't know how to do this, or if it can be done in regular AutoCAD. You might have to get Map 3D, or even Civil 3D, which would likely be the best product for you anyway considering you deal with gis.

I am pretty certain it does not work in CAD; hence my version most likely being upgraded to 3D Map to be fully comptible with our other offices and clients :D

I think I know how it might be done.

1) Import something that is already georeferenced, such as cadastral boundaries. AutoCAD works out it's own X and Y coordinate system.

2) Zoom to the extent

3) Do stuff

4) Import the whole autoCAD file back into the GIS and when you assign the projection of the original georeferenced file it changes the coordinate system back to what I want.

You might just be on to something there. Good work!
