Anyone use any DWG Managment Programs (Recommendations)?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Just wanted to ask and see if anyone had any good recommendations for a file/DWG manager/explorer program.

I stumbled across this... http://www.etecad.com/home.html ... which is pretty good. It has a fast viewer, and is pretty usable.

I would really like an explorer which is capable of displaying DWG properties (such as DIMSCALE, and so forth).

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Looking forward to hearing your input.

Marcus

Hey guys,

Just wanted to follow up on this one. Last week I discovered Directory Opus (http://www.gpsoft.com.au/) which is a great Windows Explorer replacement. Heaps up customizations and additional tools which Windows Explorer lacks (ie. an 'up' button has been missing since XP).

Not exactly a DWG management program, but it does provide a little more versatility than standard Windows Explorer.

I still look forward to hearing some further input on a DWG Manager.

Thanks a lot for any help.

-------EDIT-------

Just found this article.... http://cad.about.com/od/CAD_Standards/tp/The-Five-Best-Edms-Packages.htm

... Anyone have any experience with those ones?

Not to sound discouraging, but I just left a company that uses Bentley ProjectWise, which is something similar to these items. We all couldn't stand it, especially integrating with AutoCAD. It just simply didn't work at all. So, my point ultimately is this: use a Windows Explorer replacement all day long, but I would be hesitant on using a specific "DWG manager". I would also suggest using a trial or demo with much scrutiny, just in case there are flaws you can't live with or without.

I've just had some bad experiences with the Bentley product. And it may be more from how fervent the corporate push was on it.... just to stay clear on my bias with it. :)

Is this for "just you" or an entire office?

Hi tzframpton,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply.

We currently use Prosteel in our office, so I feel your pain regarding Bentley products.

At the moment I am just investigating/researching for my own curiosity - but if I find something worthwhile, we will take a look at setting it up for the office (small office - 4 stations).

Thanks for sharing your experince.
