Collapsing a modifier stack is defaulting to Edit Mesh?

I'm working for a company - they're using max 2012.

When I collapse a stack it becomes an editable mesh. Is there a setting to change it so it collapses to an editable poly by default as this is how I am used to this working.

Edit mesh is useless.

Before you collapse the stack, apply an "Edit Poly" modifier. Then, with the "Edit Poly" modifier highlighted, right click on it and select "Collapse To". This will collapse the stack and leave you with an editable poly.

Thanks Rod, that was what I was doing but it's an extra step. I posted this in another forum this morning. Apparently it depends on which modifiers you collapse as to which it collapses to - I just never experienced this before.
