I was wondering if it was possible to create a icon to turn and off a specific layer? If so what are the setting variable to complete this task?

I think we discussed creating buttons on another thread today already

 

put 'button*' into the search box and see what it brings up for you :)

(the star makes sure you get all the threads with both 'button' and 'buttons' in one result)
