Jaz Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Hi, Trying to draw a general location drawing from a Junior Graphics textbook. Using windows and doors (metric) from the architectural palette (AutoCAD 2013), however with this plan they aren't fitting accordingly. Is there a standard distance between the window and wall, and door and wall? Quote
ReMark Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 What do you mean by "they are fitting right"? Are you using a metric template? Quote
Jaz Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 Yeah it is. I've played around with the imperial as well. When I put a window in and centre it, it leaves 80mm either side. Would that be right? It just hasn't indicated it on the drawing. It gives me a distance of 910 for the window but the block sits inside of that. Quote
Jaz Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 The drawing itself is omitting dimensions. Quote
ReMark Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Are you using the sample dynamic blocks that come standard with AutoCAD? Quote
Jaz Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 Ummm. I'm going into view, then tool palettes, and going into the architectural tab for doors and windows. On my drawing another window says 610 but when I resize the window to fit in it doesn't give me 80 either side. It's way off. I'm guessing I shouldn't be using this then? Quote
ReMark Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 My guess you are using a dynamic block but are unaware how it works. Architectural dynamic blocks come with different built-in standard sizes. Have you taken an AutoCAD course? Quote
Jaz Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 That's my point, no matter what size I make them (to the built-in standard size) it doesn't suit the drawing and the dimensions given. The drawing is from a school textbook used for CAD. It's so confusing. I have taken AutoCAD courses however they have been very basic and don't dabble much further from drawing lines, offsetting blah blah blah. They don't offer much where I live. Quote
Jaz Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 Eg. The drawing is telling me 1810 for 2 windows, but doesn't indicate the each actual window size or distances either side. When I use that block it looks exactly like the one on the drawing however it doesn't fit properly. Frustrated. Quote
ReMark Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 What wall thickness is the book suggesting you use? Attach a copy of the drawing to your next post. Quote
ReMark Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 While I appreciate the image I'd much rather have a copy of the actual drawing. Am I reading that correctly re: wall thickness 290? Is that a finished wall? Quote
Jaz Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 Yes wall thickness is 290. That's all the text has... no description or anything. Quote
ReMark Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Are you going to attach a copy of your drawing or not? What is the thickness of the window you are using? Quote
Jaz Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 Oh Sorry, I have literally just started a drawing of the walls and putting windows in, did you want that? I've spent most of my time trying to interpret it. Quote
Jaz Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 Window thickness is 100 Location Drawing.dwg Quote
ReMark Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Is it possible the building you are trying to draw is actually of masonry construction (block and brick) thus accounting for the 290mm wall thickness? 290mm is approximately 11.5 inches in the U.S. which is not a wall thickness commonly associated with conventional wooden framed houses. Yes, I really did want a copy of YOUR drawing file. I also want to know what size window you selected from the drop-down list included with the dynamic block you are using. Please verify that you are using a metric not an imperial block as well. Quote
Jaz Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 The standard sizes are 300, 600, 750 and 900. The rest are too big. All I wanted to do was draw that image, using basic 2D CAD, and use the window and door blocks. I have checked that it is metric. I am unsure of 'what dynamic block' I am using, but all I did was go to view, tool palettes and clicked on the Architectural tab to get them. All I have is the first image I gave. It says nothing else. Quote
ReMark Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 I think I know what you did wrong. Your windows measure 750 but it appears your opening is sized for 900. You failed to notice that the dynamic block can be resized merely by using the arrows that appear when you click on the block. Quote
Jaz Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 I haven't exactly picked a window size because I try all of them in the different window spacings given in the image and they are different. If you add the length of the dining room and living room wall w/ window (3850 + 610 + + 4490) it doesn't add up to 8990. Quote
