Draw your model full scale in model space. Then in your layout, create a viewport, select it, and change its scale to your desired scale (from the Standard scale dropdown under the Misc heading in the viewport's properties).

Sounds like a mantra.

Draw your objects in model space at full size.

You don't have to set limits. AutoCAD will provide you with all the space you need to draw your object(s) even if it is an ocean liner.

Switch to your layout.

Create a viewport ( to see your model space objects).

Scale the viewport based on the size of the paper you'll be printing to.

Lock viewport so things don't get out of whack when you zoom or pan.

Plot from your layout at a scale of 1:1 (default).

Set your drawing units to architectural, draw your 90'x50' object, do a zoom/extents.

Now as for what scale to use thats gonna depend on what size border/paper you want to plot the drawing on. For example if you want to show your drawing at a 1/4" = 1'-0" your scale factor is going to be 48. So insert your border at 48 times its actual size, this will blow your border up to fit around your object. Do not scale your object to fit on the border. Of course the size of the border/paper will help to determine what scale you might want to use.

Now as to plotting your drawing, in the plot dialog box there is a whole bunch of standard scales to pick from, pick the one that applies to your drawing and you should be good to go....assuming of course you used a "standard" scale.

Of course you can also use the model space/paper space method, but that might be a little more trouble for you at this point in time.
