Have a look at "Adding Sunlight to your Drawings" http://www.cadtutor.net/acad/acad2ki/sun/sun.html and "Creating Custom Bitmap Materials" http://www.cadtutor.net/acad/acad2ki/bitmat/bitmat.html.
