Layer Manager Access

For some unknown reason, my layer properties manager is refusing to open, either by button, dropdown menu or command line. I'm using ACAD2006

Anyone got an idea how to rectify this?

Have I accidently hit something to disable it?

I can access the limited layer functions from the drop down one OK, but I need the manager for new layers, filters, etc.

The top bar changes colour and unless I press escape, the program freezes.

Once I escape, the command line text '_layer appears. (Exactly as written)

It seems the same happens when I try to Saveas also.

Wow, that is another one of those "Why does it happen in the first place?" things you find in the wonderful world of computers.

I'm sure there is a good reason, just can't put my finger on it.
