nbaryosef Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 i need to create the surfaces however i am not sure what tool to use and if the curves that i have are even correct please see attached picture Quote
shift1313 Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 i have no way to tell if your curves are correct but i will say that your curves not intersecting your sketch will most likely cause you grief. There really arent any curves on an iPhone. You could draw a box, filled the edges and go from there. As far as surface modeling goes. I usually will start with a top view and draw a general shape of what i want. extrude it. then change my view and draw a single spline or curve or whatever shape im looking for. make a surface with that single line and use thicken/cut on the surface panel to remove this from my first solid. Thats how i would proceed anyway. Do you have a picture of your phone you are working off of? Quote
JD Mather Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 You should not really need surfaces to do something as simple as an iPhone, but you might want to start out with something simple like that just to get a feel for hybrid surface/solid modeling. I suggest you start with the SWx surfacing tutorials in my signature. They follow the same sort of thinking - something simple that you don't really need to do as surfaces to more advanced that you can't do any other way. I haven't had time to keep them up-to-date with changes in the software but you should be able to figure out the differences. Quote
nbaryosef Posted February 8, 2009 Author Posted February 8, 2009 ok there is other way good, i want to use surfacing is the curves are good, what tool of surfacing i can use Quote
shift1313 Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 i could be wrong but i dont think there is any surface you can make with what you have there(all together). You could take your square, extrude it. then take one of your curves, extrude it to make a surface and use this to cut your solid. I think your best bet is to go into the help menu and look up surface. There isnt just one tool you can use to make that part. The help section will tell you what each surface tool does and what kind of curve/guide/path you need to make them work. Once you know what these tools do it will be easier layout your sketches in a way that they are usable. here is one of JDs solidworks tutorials on surface modeling(a cell phone) http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/content/DSG322/SolidWorks%20Tutorials/SolidWorks%20Tutorial%208.pdf for something simple like the phone I would probably draw a few "squares" at different levels and loft between them. When lofting you will have the option box to make it a thin feature. Quote
cedar Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Funny, there’s a new surfacing vid from SW world 08 where they talk about how deceivingly complex the iphone geometry is. http://solidmentor.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=323 Personally I think the world would work just fine if everything was lines and arcs. A surfacing guru would probably laugh at my solution… a loft. I used splines in the corners to somewhat duplicate the smooth curve round the corners. Turn on “curve combs” to visualize the weight of the curve. They are highlighted in the pic. I don’t know if there is such a thing as a correct spline, I think its more art than precision. I only did a quadrant… mirror and knit. Quote
