Hello,

I have a drawing that is in .pdf format and .tiff format, and am unable to get the CAD files. I am just curious what everyone thinks about which file formats would be best to insert into autocad and trace. In my experience both .pdfs and .tiffs are a pain in the butt. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

I find Jpeg is good as cad finds it faster to load and use in the drawing.

You can go to Save As in PDF format and save as a Jpg.

This only seems to apply if you are using a full version of Acrobat, and not just Acrobat Reader

You can download Acrobat 5 full version for free I believe.

I find PDF works better than images in general from what I've tried.

I agree with NBC if you use the default pdf creator in autocad the file size is much larger. Plotting pdfs that were not created with the full version of Acrobat takes forever as well.

The filesize of pdf files created is primarily related to the resolution that they are printed to.

The default of 300 dpi far exceeds the needs of most office printers; as this is what 'copyshop's predominantly use. In general, this will create a reasonably large file size relative to printing out to 96 dpi (which appears to be more than satisfactory for most uses)

We downloaded the new add on for autocad to be able to insert PDF's, and you can snap to the lines in the pdf too... ive already used it, pretty slick.

NBC - do you know how to change the default 300 dpi to 96 in the autocad pdf creator?

EMS - Where would i download such an add on and is it free?

Thanks!

@ Ryan:

There should be a setting on the right hand side of your plot dialogue box (accessed either through PLOT, or through the Page Setup) which determines the 'Quality'. Setting this to Custom allows you to specify the dpi to your needs.

Alternatively, if the pdf creator is a Windows System Printer (i.e. it is accessible via Windows Control Panel -> Printers) simply open the specific printer, then right click, select Printing Preferences, then click on the Advanced Tab. There should be a section that identifies 'Print Quality: (dpi)'.

The Autocad guy here at work gave it to me to install, i think you can download it off of autodesks site...

I think it may be subscription only, or at least it was. I believe they implemented it into the full version of 2010 though.
