Can't Save!!!

Recommended Posts

Everytime I go to save a drawing I'm working on, the following message pops up: “Unable to save to drawing H:\MAIN Project Files\AAA ACITVE PROJECTS\Koaxis (10.1108.00)\Engineering\AutoCAD – DWG\BDR.dwg as it is being accessed by another session. Drawing saved to H:\MAIN Project Files\AAA ACTIVE PROJECTS\Koaxis (10.1108.00)\Engineering\AutoCAD – DWG\sav1E1F.tmp”. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it? Thank you

When AutoCAD saves a drawing, it writes the drawing to a temp file, then it deletes the current .bak file (if present), then it renames the .dwg to .bak., and then finally it renames the .tmp to .dwg.

So the .tmp is being created OK, but it looks like the final step can't complete. Is this a network location? Have you checked with your sys admin to see if there are network problems?

You wouldn't by chance have that drawing open twice in two sessions of autocad would you? Or is it possible someone else in your office has the same drawing open?

If all else fails, do a SAVEAS and name it something unique that you can remember so you don't lose your work. If it still won't save, time to call your IT guy and hope the power doesn't go off.

I think it could be an xref related problem.

Does this drawing you are working on utilize any xrefs?

Yes this is a network location. But it seems to be something with the temporary or backup files.

Mind answering my question too. Thanks.

Sounds like a demand loading problem. From your AutoCAD Help file:

If you turn on demand loading with the Enable with Copy option, the program makes a temporary copy of the referenced drawing and demand loads the temporary file.

Temporary file (*.tmp). Does that ring any bells?

yes it utilizes xrefs as well

Thank you.

Then I believe I know what the problem is.

is it the problem you just mentioned above? because that seemed to ring some bells. How would I fix that?

yes it utilizes xrefs as well

Try disabling the Demand Load Xref option and see if that fixes the problem. If you have the option already disabled then someone else who is demand loading xrefs that you utilize as well then needs to do the same thing.

What is the name of this drawing?

\BDR.dwg

Turning off the demand loading xref didn't work. Do you have any other ideas?

Yes, I do. Have your IT department do some housecleaning and delete all *.TMP files from the server.

Can i ask what will this do? Also will we lose any important data?

Posted

It will free up space on the server (a good thing). No, why should you lose any important data? Your drawings contain the most important data followed by any bak files.

They are called temporary files (TMP) for a reason.

It still didn't work. We disabled what you suggested on all the computers, and deleted the .tmp files. Any other suggestions?

I never saw the answer to this question --> What is the name of the drawing you are "working on" as you say in your first sentence?

On a typical file that is exhibiting this problem did you check its read-only attribute?
