Noahma Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 An Xref is an external reference. Xrefs don't become a part of the drawing's database. They load along with the current drawing file at startup time. The advantage is this keeps the drawing file size to a minimum. Consult your AutoCAD Help file for further details or purchase a good third-party AutoCAD book. to add to what Remark said about Xref's You will need to break apart all of your model into separate files. IE a file for seats, a file for concessions ect. Then, create a blank drawing, and xref all of the other files into this blank file. This will be the file which will show everything you have done. When you are done working with a particular area you unload that xref and it will essentially turn it off. You can work through the main file on any xrefed files by editing the xref in place (hidden in the right click menu) This is how large firms are able to work on a single building. My main files for generating elevations and sections for residential projects when having everything xref'd in, is a tad over 7mb, whereas it would be 60-70 if everything was in a single file. The other thing you can do is to Audit and purge your drawing. And even think about dialing down the detail on your modeling. Quote
Danny Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 It seems you got enough answers to lighten up this model to work on it. My only question is if you can't work on it all together (as one piece) How are you going to join every section and then render it ???? If your processor and or graphic card can't handle sections of a wire frame, its certainly not going to handle any type decent render. So I don't want to sound rude, but why are you building something that large on a computer that will I hate to say this will never be able to finish that model. Unless of course you seriously minimize the detail. Which I'm sure you don't want to do. Good luck. I hope you get this worked out. This is the right place to get some solid honest advise, there are alot of very knowledgeable people on this site. Keep asking questions, Good luck on your endeavor Quote

Because I faced such a problem right off the getgo, I figured "oh in 3 years we'll have a better version of ACAD and I'll be able to put them all in one document". And, here I am today, with the same problem I faced as a freshman. Quote
chelsea1307 Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 You dont need a better version of autocad you need a better computer Quote

Shore Regional Posted September 9, 2009 Author Posted September 9, 2009 You dont need a better version of autocad you need a better computer Yes, well I know that now  Quote
ReMark Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 If you were doing this on your home computer and ran into these types of problems we would be suggesting upgrading your system with more RAM and a better graphics card or, depending on the age of the computer, even suggesting buying a new (quad core) computer. Seems you are stuck with your school's setup for the time being. Quote
Shore Regional Posted September 10, 2009 Author Posted September 10, 2009 I case anyone was curious, this is a very very very bare couple of pictures of the front of my stadium (the file that's 67,000KB), as well as my original cross section. Quote
Shore Regional Posted September 10, 2009 Author Posted September 10, 2009 Oh, and please keep the flaming down to a minimum... I'm very new at this program (3 years). Quote
chelsea1307 Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 lookin good, hopefully you can get to a point of being able to work on it. have you tried breaking it down into more pieces, like north side/south side or east/west right/left level by level Quote
ReMark Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 You are doing Fenway next right? LOL Looks good. Now if we could just get you a setup that could truely handle what you've created that would be awesome dude! Quote
Shore Regional Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 Haha if I can ever complete Yankee Stadium I'll do Fenway!!! I love baseball, I think building the green monster would be thoroughly entertaining! Quote

Now if we could just get you a setup that could truely handle what you've created that would be awesome dude! Agreed, you need to beef up your tools. Until then look at it this way your learning the hard way, when you finally get a proper system it willl be as easy as a walk in the Ball-Park I crack myself up.. I'll be here all week !!! Quote

I sent my teacher an email hoping he would "register" our school so that I can get the program, but no response yet. Quote
Shore Regional Posted September 17, 2009 Author Posted September 17, 2009 Well, I just got an email from my teacher giving me a link, and an hour later I have AutoCAD 2010 on my home computer. Thank you guys so much, you have no idea how much you've helped me! Quote
ReMark Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 Now we expect you do model the new home of the Dallas Cowboys seeing how you have the latest in software. Ask Dad for a new computer while you're at it too. Maybe you'll get lucky! Quote
Shore Regional Posted September 18, 2009 Author Posted September 18, 2009 Not kidding, I'm a HUGE cowboys fan-- my dad grew up in Texas. I'd love to be able to do that! Maybe in a few years, when I'm better at the program! Quote
ReMark Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 "Maybe in a few years, when I'm better at the program." The way your going I'd change that to just a couple of months. Quote

I appreciate the compliment, but I still haven't applied for colleges yet so a project like that seems impossible for a "learner" of the product. You guys, on the other hand... Quote
