Frana Posted October 18, 2010 Author Posted October 18, 2010 I'd hate to think that my file is shot. It just doesn't make sense?! I had walls that were drawn in around 1 week beforehand. And a I had a machine drawn up that I hadn't done anything to all of last week. Why would the file just decide to delete these objects during a save? And that preview window that shows the machine I was drawing before I closed out. It's in the same view i was in when i closed, but it's not there? It's just all seems weird, and frustrating. As for rapidshare, my company blocks the use of it. Quote
Frana Posted October 18, 2010 Author Posted October 18, 2010 Well, I attempted to recover the .bak file from the save to my desktop. Did not work, it flashed a pic of the machine I was working on, but then I still ended up with the same file with missing objects. I messed with the audit, I tried it first on the file in the network folder, by saying "fix errors (y)". I then closed out and re-opened that file to try audit again, this time saying "fix errors (n)" Wasn't sure what would happen. And of course as I stated earlier, lots of errors were found and so on... So, with my last bit of dying breath, listening to "taps", I made a copy of the .bak file from the network save which had a last mod date of the day prior to my save. I renamed this with a .dwg ext. and opened. YES! The file opened, without all the mods I made during thursday, but everything else is there!!! Which was ALOT more than I had remembered. This is a bit of very good news considering the potential loss I was dealing with. I also ran the audit on this file, and 0 errors found! Still don't understand? Now, with a conversion of a .bak file... I just saved as a new file name. Is this all I must do? I would like to completely break ties with the old files and sorta start clean. Quote
ReMark Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 Yes, do a "save as" using a new name. Get a better back up system going too. Don't put your trust in the virtual network. Back up your files to a CD, DVD or even a flash drive. You came real close to disaster. I'd be a lot more careful in the future especially with large files. I'd also keep a close eye on this particular drawing if I were you. Consider running it through Audit again the next time you open it up. Quote
Frana Posted October 18, 2010 Author Posted October 18, 2010 Ran the audit once more, still 0 errors. I saved a third copy to a flash drive. Not sure why I hadn't thought of that before. I usually save my "completed" files on there. I will agree, I got real lucky on this somehow, but still have no clue what happened. Very scary, especially on this file. This was my biggest project yet. Again, as always, I appreciate the help this forum gives out. And I do apologize for bothering everyone, but I freaked when the file opened the way it did and I couldn't find anything! Quote
ReMark Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 Your file got corrupted in some manner. Bad sectors on hard drives are one of the major causes of corrupted files. Quote
