What is a person Actually responsible for? Write that up, and nothing else. Make them something you can hold a person to at review time. Base them on what the job needs to be for your company.

Many job descriptions you find on the internet are written to look impressive on monster.com or to fulfill an RFP for a government contract.

I've found a job decription for a given position will vary wildly from company to company and often has minimal relevance to reality. Once I had a "Lead Carpenter" position at a country club. Funny thing is, I was the only carpenter there and was not told ahead of time about that. Try maintaining 322 cedar Adirondack chairs that sit out in the weather 24/7, 35 hotel rooms, two restaurants, two bars, 4 workout rooms, and two pool houses completely by yourself:shock:. Seems the highly touted teamwork atmosphere turned out to be on the wish list. At least I didn't have to do plumbing, HVAC, electrical, or paint. One other surprise, twice a week the maintenance section, part of which the carpenter is, rotated janitorial duties in the rest rooms and resaurant grease pits. I didn't mind mopping the rest rooms, but cleaning out a grease pit is something I had to do in the army when I ticked off an E5 or above. I left after 3 months:celebrate:and went back to building gazebos and purgolas for rich people.

-team leader/supervisor Responsible for setting impossible deadlines, or when reasonable deadlines exist, issuing enough revision work to make the deadline impossible. Qualifications include being related to the owner of the company, owning a large number of plaid sweaters and thinking that Paint will do everything AutoCAD does for free. No previous work experience of any kind required.

-drafter Responsible for anything that goes wrong whether he worked on it or not. Is expected to sacrifice home life, leisure activities, breaks, and lunches to meet deadlines set by team leader/supervisor. Should be tolerant of rants thrown by upper management and never expect more than a 1.5% pay increase regardless of how well the company is doing.

-drafting manager (including QA/standards manager) This is now you, and you are responsible for fixing the previous two problems, not perpetuating or adding to them!

Because your in Oz like me check the local government websites for jobs they always have detailed job descriptions look for engineer and technical officer

You can hardly go past seek.com. Although as above it is probably better to just tailor it to your needs.

yeah i get we will need to make it suit the people/roles in our office, only wanted them for a rough guide just to see what other people have got, yes everyone is different but i assuming that the basics would be pretty much the same everywhere. so if anyone has some that would be great.

I saw one the other day for a "Lead Fulfilment Engineer"

Hospitality Specialist. Must look good in black lowcut dresses, able to write on a floorplan with dry markers, wipe off dry marker with DRY cloth, never give wait time of less than 35 minutes.... (AKA hostess)

If I were to compare my duties to what others do, I should be paid double what I am, but that's not gonna happen. I like my pay, enjoy (most of) my day-to-day tasks and enjoy (most of) the people I work with. So my version of CAD Manager will differ from, say, Dana's or Jack's.

I love Jack's response.

If everyone agree's they're "draftsmen", find their common ground and practices, make that the role. Have it approved by above and make sure it's adhered to. If they're stripped of any responsibility, make sure it's allocated elsewhere so people are held responsible for mistakes somewhere in the chain of command. For instance, if the draftsman is no longer allowed to contact the client, make sure someone is required to, like a manager/supervisor.

Just my $.02

Mine was done with a bit of "tongue in cheek", but it does seem like that's the way it works sometimes, especially the "plaid sweater relative of the owner" bit.

Well, that sort of stuff is pretty wide spread. I worked in that place more than once in 2 different cities.:x A new manager came in thinking AutoCAD came pre-loaded with dynamic blocks of every possible configuration of kitchen cabinet, sink, bathtub, ceiling light, fence post, and flower pot there ever could be. It wasn't even 2007 yet, pre dynamic block.

Seems he visited a kitchen sales showroom once. He saw 20/20 Kitchen Design sofware handled by a slick salesman. Musta found something in the visit to put on his resume.

At my place, "Lead Draftsman" or "Lead Designer" is a 'title' given to the main draftsman on a given project by the engineer/manager/etc. Makes the person feel all warm and fuzzy, but it's really just a temp title given to the person that's going to get blamed for everything, including the secretary clocking in late or the soda machine not accepting dollar bills only coins (still haven't figured that one out).

I feel your pain, as I have been there lol.

My place:

CAD Technician >> Senior CAD Technician >> Designer >> Senior Designer

Separately within each discipline, one (or more) 'CAD Leaders' are appointed internally. This is a title not distributed via email signature or anything formal, other than for corporate level IT/CAD discussions, training events, etc.. It is our responsability to setup, support all CAD deployments within our discipline, within our region... in accordance with corporate CAD standards, etc. For example, I'm in the Transportation group for my region, and there are 9 offices in my region. In the office at which I work, there are 5 'CAD Leaders' each a member of a different discipline.

^^ Hope that makes sense.

We do not assign temporary titles per project, as we typically work on multiple projects throughout the year. When one submittal has gone out, we shift gears and focus on the next project.

we are the same we have two teams of draftees in the structural department each team has a perm. leader (unless they leave), we used to have a 'leader' for each project which was used to make them feel warm and fuzzy which was bad cause we had no consistancy across our jobs cause all they did was stuff around. i have been here for a year and now we are starting to come together, all jobs are going out the same as we now have standards. we are going to have a blanket description for each title so the draftees have aleast a goal to work to, and then they can also learn items on the Leaders description so when time comes if we need new leader we have got one trained, this will a big base to going towards Pay reviews along with how that specific drafter works in the office. so we dont want to be making 20 different descriptions or we will never get anywhere we want one description for an ideal drafter that they can all work towards becoming.

around here if you give people titles to aspire towards they will expect an increase in there pay grade when they achieve it, something to consider, I'm sure you don't want any of this to lead to a disgruntled employee. :)

I'd rather you keep the title and just give me more money. Being able to sign "Lord High MucketymucK after my name does nothing towards helping me pay the mortgage.

Give me the title, give me the responsibility, I'll expect the (small) pay raise in a month when I've proven myself. Most importantly, if you're giving me a title, support me. Don't tell me I'm above anyone but not tell them.
