the180fury Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Hi Guys, First time here, i have a problem I am using Autocad lite 2011 and need to draw if you can picture a column with a 15 mm deep fillet 42 mm wide which has a ramp and twist applied to it spiralling all the way up it. How do i go about this. regards dan Quote
ReMark Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Sounds like a job better suited for full AutoCAD and 3D. Quote
Bill Tillman Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 (edited) Welcome to the forum. You will find answers to almost anything in here. But your description of the column is a little vague. Ramp & Twist is an official term but I could use a little more detail. I think by this you mean you have a square column which is 42mm on each side and the 90° corners all have a 15 mm radius. So in essence you have a rounded square column. I think we all understand what you mean by twist, but again, you description is vague. First off, ReMark makes a good point. It's very difficult to create a 2D profile of a column like this using AutoCAD LT. The base and the column are not too difficult but the twist or what we call "helix" is another thing. Only the very artistic among us could do that with any accuracy using AutoCAD LT. In regular AutoCAD creating a 3D model of this kind of column could be done easily and in a short time. If you can describe the details a little more in depth we could create the column for you in 3D. You can still open the drawing we create with LT but you'll only be able to see the 2D views of it. If that's all you're after we can certainly help you out. But if you need 3D views or perspectives of it, then you will need the full blown version of AutoCAD to do this. SLW210 Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Is this a 3D column? If so, does 2011 LT have the _SWEEP command? If 2D you will need a spline or maybe arcs. Just a hand drawn sketch might help here. Quote
ReMark Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 I doubt that LT would have a Sweep command. I thought you pretty much could only view 3D objects not edit them in LT. And forget even creating a 3D object. Quote
JD Mather Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Attach file here of what you have been able to complete (right or wrong). Quote
fuccaro Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 Your solution could be to have the column drawn in 3D by someone from here and you insert the 2D view in your drawing. As my colleagues told you: post a sketch or an image, anything to make us to understand better. Quote
ReMark Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 Guess he really wasn't interested in getting some help. Quote
Bill Tillman Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 ReMark Guess he really wasn't interested in getting some help. Guess he twisted his ramp or something.... Quote
Jack_O'neill Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Depending on where he is, it might be past his bedtime now you know. Quote
the180fury Posted October 23, 2011 Author Posted October 23, 2011 Thanks for the help so far guys apart from the sarcastic contributions, I have not been able to carry on with the column until today i will try to attach a file with as much info as i can. Quote
ReMark Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 We thought you might be in a bit more of a rush to solve the problem and when you did not post right back our minds started to wander. Any chance you can answer a question or two in your next response? Quote
the180fury Posted October 23, 2011 Author Posted October 23, 2011 Yes absolutely, what i'm trying to do is actually draw up the column in 2d with as much info as possible (almost there hopefully another hour or two pending work distractions) the fillet which is spiraling up the column if you can imagine like a ribbon I can not draw in 2d on my software, maybe unless I freehand it. So hopefully when i attach what i can do from my side shortly it will make more sense. I really only need front and top view of said column for this project but if i could also get a 3d version would be great. Quote
the180fury Posted October 23, 2011 Author Posted October 23, 2011 Gowings twisted columns.dwg Okay here is my feeble attempt at this column. Now as previously stated I really only need front top and side 2D. However an addition of a 3D version would also be great. Hope there is enough info but basically the fillet you see wraps around like a ribbon which is where my problem lies and also getting those studs to look right in 2d eludes me. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Jack_O'neill Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Not so feeble my friend. That's not a bad looking column just as you have it. Couple of questions for you though. The 'fillets' you refer too...are the supposed to be on the corners, or is that indented bit supposed to have a round bottom? Not quite sure what should be filleted Quote
the180fury Posted October 24, 2011 Author Posted October 24, 2011 Yes if you can imagine looking at the column front on you would see the fillet appear almost like an s shape not like the straight 45 degree line i have run through on the angle so in other words the ends as you see wrap around the column have a radius applied hence the ramp and twist. Sorry, I dozed off watching TV last night. Is this what you are trying to do? This one doesn't match your column, but we can make it match. I just wanted to see if that was the look you were after without spending gobs of time on the details. Quote
the180fury Posted October 24, 2011 Author Posted October 24, 2011 YES !!!!That is exactly what i am trying to do Don't mean to be pushy but how soon could you knock one of these out to suit? Quote
Jack_O'neill Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I've been out on some service calls the last couple of days. I should be back home later today and will try to get you something. Sorry for the delay. Quote
Jack_O'neill Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 @the180fury....I owe you an apology. I got completely buried in work, even had to take a small road trip, and I completely forgot about your column. Did you get it drawn? I am very sorry. Quote
