oddbob Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I need a new monitor as my current one is a big dodgy - an intermittent fault with colour. The boss has given me a £200 budget to spend on whatever I think is best. I'm not even sure if that's decent money for a monitor but if anyone has any recommendations on makes and models please let me know. I guess it's always the bigger the better for CAD applications? tzframpton Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Best monitors available are the IPS LCD's. This gives you crystal clear visuals, but resolution matters more for AutoCAD since you gain more real estate for tools/drafting space/etc. Best thing to do, get the biggest monitor with the highest resolution that the budget will allow. Bigger isn't always better if the resolution doesn't follow. Quote
oddbob Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 Thanks for the advice. Can I ask what make / model you use yourself? (an anyone else who posts?) Quote
tzframpton Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Here's an IPS monitor that's in your budget, but only 1920x1080 res. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-Ultrasharp-U2312HM-inch-Monitor/dp/tech-data/B005MHMFJA/ref=de_a_smtd Here's an IPS monitor that's out of your budget, but has a much better 1920x1200 res, and bigger. http://www.amazon.co.uk/TFT-61-24-16-FULL-HD/dp/B005LN1GTK/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1331562063&sr=1-1 And for serious interests only, Dell makes a 27" IPS with 2560x1440, which is the best there is for a single CAD monitor. Don't forget that dual monitors are a great option too. Getting two cheap monitors sometimes can gain more screen real estate and more efficiency than a single high-res monitor. Quote
ReMark Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 My Dell P24LLH 24" LCD widescreen is quite nice. Quote
oddbob Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 one of my replies to the above has been removed? wha? what did I do wrong? I only asked if IPS monitors had good colour reproduction or not. Is this an overly-moderated forum or something? hmmm Quote

tzframpton Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Probably was an error in the submission of the response. I highly doubt a mod would delete a post like that. And to answer your question, IPS is the absolute best there is as far as color and reproduction. Read up on it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPS_panel Quote
oddbob Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 This thread shows 0 deleted posts. Error is on your end. It was certainly here. Odd! Anyway, great advice. IPS sounds like the trick for me so I guess now it comes down to size / resolution and (of course) price! Quote
oddbob Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 OIE = Operator Induced Error. Are you suggesting the issue was somewhere between my chair and keyboard? Quote
f700es Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 You get those too? Are you suggesting the issue was somewhere between my chair and keyboard? Now to be relative to the thread, I just got a 27.5 Samsung at work and it's not too bad. I am getting 1920x1080 screen res so it's easy on the eyes. Quote

nestly Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I don't really have a specific recommendation about brands or models, but all else being equal, I would consider a display with 5:8 aspect ratio over the current trend of ultra wide 9:16 formats. As you can see below, a 24" monitor at 5:8 ratio has a lot more real estate compared to a 24" display in 9:16 format. When using the Ribbon, which further reduces the height of the drawing area, there's nearly 10% more drawing area. Quote
f700es Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 What model is that Samsung? Full HD would be great. It's over in my user specs under my user name Click on Computer Details P2770HD is my main and a B24430 is my 2nd screen. Quote

oddbob Posted March 14, 2012 Author Posted March 14, 2012 hi - me again! Does anyone own an AOC monitor? I've never seen the brand before but lots of IPS monitors are made by AOC by the looks of it. Quote
tzframpton Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 IPS is a product of its own. The "brand" of monitor doesn't make the IPS technology. This is my assumption, anyways. Quote
