Newby questions: How to get started?

That is nice to hear, sounds like you are starting to get the hang of it, and enjoying how it looks, cool!

When you use the trim command, try entering TRIM then right click twice, then select the lines you hope to trim out. As I recall I think nestly selected a single cutting edge.

In that way everything in the drawing is selected as a trimming edge, so wherever lines touch or cross you can easily trim either of them.

Did you remember to use the FILLETEDGE command to relieve the sharp corners of the bracket with a nice radius of about 4?

When you are totally satisfied with how your piece looks, we will let the program do the 2D drawings, after which you will

do the dimensions by hand.

Well, first of all I'm amazed of how relatively easy and fast a drawing / model is beeing created in 3D! I always thought it was a lot more work / effort to create stuff in 3D but thanks to you all I'm really going to love this!

Let me get back to my drawing...

It seems I can't put a double line between the two circles to create a slot.

Instead, I have drawn a symetrical line.

Selecting the two centre points inside the two circles, then draw a line on the left side were the red helpline crosses the outerline of the circle.

This will create a drawing like in the picture below:

My try to get the TRIM command working:

While in 3D Modeling area (meaning the tab at the top-left corner)

I click on the TRIM command.

The statusbar shows the message:"TRIM Select objects or

When I try to select something, I think I get an errormessage stating:

"Object is Perpendicular to UCS XY plane."

Glad you are enjoying yourself, reminds me of when I started working in 3D. :)

Is your DYNAMIC UCS turned on?

Try using your NE ISOMETRIC view.

Up in the upper left hand corner of your modelspace viewport,

as shown in your screen capture, click on CUSTOM VIEW

and when the dropdown menu opens you can choose any of the standard 10 perspectives,

the 6 orthogonal and 4 isometrics.

Enter TRIM at the commandline, then hit ENTER 2 times.

If you turn on your QUADRANT OSNAPS you can very easily draw those 2 sidelines of the slot, from QUADRANT to QUADRANT, real easy.

Give it a try.

Once the holes are done, don't forget to FILLETEDGE those sharp corners.

Click on your view cube such that the view is oriented parallel to the screen.

You should be looking at your "sketch" as though everything is 2D - as this geometry that you are working on is 2D at this point.

BTW - you don't really need to trim the arcs.

You could simply presspull 3 times to remove the 3 areas of the slot.

You make an excellent point there JD!

Much ado about nothing.

How can I check that?

I've looked into the help file but it's still a bit unclear to me.

Ok, I think I've got this one!

It's the box just at the leftside of the drop-down window like in the picture below? (Not the drop-down menu itselves!):

By the way, can I change the color of the white cross (mouse pointer)???

Because I now have a white cross at a white background... Eyes aren't that good anymore :P

F6 should turn your DYNAMIC UCS on or off, there is also an icon for it at the bottom of your screen in the status bar.

Are you working from your layout?

It sounds like it, because you say you have a white background.

Try clicking on your MODEL tab to go back to your MODELSPACE.

You cannot change your perspective when in paperspace, it will always show TOP.

If you are in a VIEWPORT you can do it though.

With white background, I mean the surface of the bracket I'm working with:

You should be able to select the 3D solid and change the color from by layer to whatever color you fancy,

either in your QUICK PROPERTIES or PROPERTIES. Or you could change the color of the layer

which it is on, and keep the color by layer for the solid.

I have the NE ISOMETRIC view clicked on...

And I've checked and DYNAMIC UCS is on...

When I draw to circles and want to add a line to create a slot, I get the following:

create_slot_01.JPG

When I click to draw the line, the line isn't were I want him to be.

Instead of on the place were the cross centre is, the line is placed at the green triangle...

Also, I don't know what I've done but when I try to create a symetric line as I did before, I can't place it.

At the bottom of the screen in the command bar I get an error mesaage saying something like: "The line is not in current UCS. Using projected line._.PLINE"

Ok, Ive right-clicked on the Object Snap icon at the bottom, and in the menu that appears I've selected the Quadrant...

But it seemds like there is no difference...

Sometimes AutoCAD will not acquire Quadrant Osnaps if the circle is not on the same plane as the current UCS. When this happens, just type "Quad" to force AutoCAD to use the Quadrant Osnap.

Thanks for this solution, this works great!

Now figure out how to do the work with the TRIM command...

I will look to some previous post of you all and give it another try.

We'll getting further step-by-step
