The One thing you wish a new Drafter would know!

#1 in my book (although there are so many)

Draw with precision. e.g.

1/2 = .5

1/4 = .25

3/16 = .1875 (not .19)

1/8 = .125

3/32 = .09375 (.09)

etc.

(I know, the pitfalls of imperial units and all that)

And as an extension to the precision use snap points to existing geometry.

1. Know how to use paperspace.

2. If you set ANYTHING to a yellow color, you're fired!

Not if you draw with black background - Blue now, that is insta-fire!

When you start a new page don't use the old file copy and wipe the drawing space trick. Or if you feel you must make sure you PURGE the file! We've got a few 10mb files that when I purged them went down to 250kb :D Not ideal when we create a backup for every revision...

Set AUTOCOMPLETE to on if using later versions. If you are trying to remember or find a command or variable try typing a few letters of what you think it would be called and let the program give you options. Need to do something with grips, type grips or *grips* if not in 2014 and look at the options available. Then use HELP to checkout the ones you think are what you might need. You learn a lot that way. Also use Express Tools system variables (sysvldlg) to look up system variables.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned so keep your model space clean and organized. I despise when people leave a messy model space with grids not aligning from plan to plan, random scribbling off to the side etc.

One of the first things I was taught was to zoom in close to the area of the drawing you are working on to make sure you're snapping to the correct points.

I would also advise to always use MText, keep annotations neat and aligned and not overlapping other parts of the drawing, if possible.

CAD programs should come with a list of recommended practices as many users do not have the benefit of working alongside someone who has made a career of drafting.

AutoCAD should come with a pocket sized ReMark

I am the CAD Manager. I define the One Standard, not you.

The One Standard was forged by the Dark Lord (CAD Manager) during the Second Age (long before you were here) in order to gain dominion over the free peoples of the Engineering department.

One Standard to rule them all, One Standard to find them,

One Standard to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

Encoded deep in the bowls of your program files you may find it, but there is no escaping its awesome power! (besides, it is read-only).

He has a point CAD Manager. While you may have kept it under '1' Standard, when you look at it closely there are 3 standard comprising that standard. Therefore, stevsmith must replace you.

Did somebody mention the Engineering Dept?

Two engineering students were biking across a university campus when one said, "Where did you

get such a great bike?" The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding

my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all

her clothes and said, "Take what you want." The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, "Good

choice: The clothes probably wouldn't have fit you anyway."

Sorry guys, I just couldn't help myself.
