Combining the two systems is not definitely going to speed things up, though.

Sometimes you have to.

e.g.

In the UK all off-the shelf structural sections and bar stock are metric sized.

If you are doing process piping, for the oil or nuclear industries, all piping, valves, etc. are ASME/ANSI so imperial sizes.

Most equipment, compressors, air recievers, pumps, etc. are metric sized but ordered with ANSI flanges.

So if you are doing a piping run with structural supports, pipe bridges, and so on, you find yourself having to work with both metric and imperial sizes at the same time.

eg. you will specify an 8" pipe 3000mm long.

Perhaps not the best example but you can see what I mean.

reminds me of a story in our office at the time of "metrication". Our guy goes to the DIY store for some wood.

"I'd like some 2 by 4 please"

"sorry mate, its all metric now"

"OK, 50 by 100"

"how much?"

"2 meters"

"sorry we only sell it by the foot"

"How long do you want 'em?"

"I plan on keeping them."

At the time of metrication in Australia this was the method .The setout stake has down 580 written on it, the guy gets out his tape measure and yells out to the excavator operator down 23"

well, I will not cast too many stones - we done things metricly all my life, but even I still ask for a 3 inch nail - and all smaller size pipes are measured in inches...

So many people say that the US should drop imperial, but it sounds like the rest of the world can't make the switch. How you get back to US when you do finally get there?

Oh so you mean we should be consistent in what we do and what we say? Nah, we don't roll that way.

(yes, my tongue is firmly in cheek)

Most people don't and resist the urge to do so.

Doesn't that make it hard to talk and eat?

It does, it also means I bite my own tongue quite often, what I won't do for this forum!
