ReMark Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 Same here. I really enjoy the part where he says "AND PULL UP YOUR PANTS!" Quote
nathanjh13 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I use LinuxMint 11 as much as possible and run Cad on Windows through Virtualbox. Mint is a phenomenal system though I must say. It's like having the best of all worlds for free. At work I have a dual boot between Mint 11 and XP, which is great because when installed alongside Windows it can easily be removed in Add/remove programs if need be (but I can't see me needing to). If you're not familiar with Linux etc have a go at the trial http://www.linuxmint.com or see clips on Youtube, this is a great clip albeit on an older version etc: I urge you to watch the above link if you're unfamiliar with this. I know so many people who've switched. I used to see Linux almost as a novelty years ago but now it's shaping up as a forced to be reckoned with it's so fast, stable and elegant. Ubuntu is the most popular strain but Mint is the most "Windowsy" and the easiest to crossover to. Enjoy PS I will have a look at CorelCad, I used ProgeCAD which was OK but a bit too out of date going in. Thanks for the link, all the best to everyone. Quote
f700es Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Hi Nathan, I've used Mint before on a live CD and it does work very well. I am glad that we are seeing some mature autocad like cad programs finally on linux. LInux has come a long way. While I am not sure if it will ever be a desktop replacement for the masses it does offer a nice option to more power users. I recently played with some Gnome3 distros and that takes a bit to get familiar with. I want to set up a dual boot on my new PC at home and try to use a linux distro more. I wish I could get SketchUp to work like it does on windows. I might look more into if it was there. Thanks for the info. Quote
f700es Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 You know what? I might just put Mint on my old laptop. I don't use it for CAD and it might bring it back to life. Quote
Glen1980 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Ubuntu worked a treat for my Laptop. Pretty much the same but without all the drivers and software pre-installed. Quote
nathanjh13 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Great stuff. Hope it works out for you. There are so many decent distro's out there now we're spoilt for choice. If you want sketch up get hold of the 'play on linux' app from software manager and an easy install of sketch up 7 or 8 is facilitated in there. Best. Nath. Quote
