the command line is still here if you want it to be. I like it but know some people like it hiden

I have it hidden and use the dynamic input. What I wouldn't like is for the command line syntax to be removed. I have to echo Maxwell's comment!

There is serious discussion about eliminating the command line. I think it may hang on just a wee bit longer before AutoDesk drives a stake through its heart. Just to placate the "old-timers" as Lee Mac would say.

Haha, well said.

And what, pray tell, is the supposed benefit of removing the command line?

Posted

Exactly...

1) Its impedence on the drawing space is negligible.

2) You can access LISP directly through it.

3) Access to command shortcuts - which are normally quicker than menus.

4) Errors and Command restrictions can easily be identified...

the list is endless!

And finally its a well known fact that the hand is quicker than the eye.

Exactly, everyone knows that.. :P

It's the way of the future. Remember, AutoDesk is going to take us there whether we want to go or not. They've done it before and they will continue to do it again. Change is inevitable. Someone here told me that, for which I am now thankful.

Change may be inevitable, But then there is always:

They dont make them like they use to.

Well I can see a reasoning behind the move to the ribbon, and after a few iterations it may prove to be a better solution. But I see absolutely no reason to remove the command line. Heck the Sysvars, LISPS, and Express tools alone make it worthwhile. Want to have it off by default, fine. I can deal. But removing it altogether is extraordinarily unwise.

I doubt our arguments for or against the removal will make much difference to be honest - if AutoDesk want to remove it, they will :(

I don't think Autodesk will ever remove the command line in AutoCAD. After all screen menues (is that what it's called) can still be turned on.

But what about making the command line smarter, like in Rhino? There you can type L and get a list of commands with "Line" on the top, and options shown in the command line are "clickable".

you can do this though, type L and press TAB :)

Yes, but it's really nice to see the list of possible commands as you type, at least for us over 40 :)

YOUNGSTER - some of us are over 50!

When did they start on the idea of losing the cmd bar? I may have alot of menu's on screen but 90% of how i work is through the keyboard, surely with how customisable AutoCAD is they'll leave it in and just let users decide what the want to do?

Posted

I'm using the 2010 alpha version & they've even got rid of the keyboard... everything's done by thought control now & it works I could do with a coffee quite well .

I don't think they'll ever actually get rid of the command line but I do think that, like all of the old 'classic' menus & buttons, you'll have to set it up to view it & they'll re-task f2.

Hedge? Is that really you? Where have you been? Hibernating???

AutoCAD on "thought control". Now there's a recipe for disaster. God knows what the output would be but I bet whatever it is it could not be built by mere mortals.
