steve klossing
I have autocad for windows rel.12c1 with ame 16 disk total. I need to reload the program but disk 1 is now corrupt. Can someone help me with this?
ReMark
Sorry, all I have is r9, r11 and r14. You're trying to install directly from the disk? Have you tried just copying all the disks to your hard drive and installing from there?
steve klossing
The drive will not read the disk. All it will do is ask if Iwant to format. I learned autocad on r12 many years ago. Of the releases 12,13 and 14 would one be better?
ReMark
In my humble opinion release 14 would be the best choice. What are your computer specs at the moment? What OS is being used?
steve klossing
hp 533w,2GHz cpu,256 mb ram,50 gb hd,xp home. Is the any hope to replace disk one? Where might get r14 and what should I pay for it. What is the difference between r12 and r14?
ReMark
Might want to consider boosting your RAM a bit. AutoDesk is not going to sell, give or let you borrow a r12c1 disk #1. End of story. The differences between versions can best be seen by going to the link below and scrolling down the page until you get to the links that cover each release. You can see what "features" AutoDesk added. http://autodesk.blogs.com/between_the_lines/autocad-release-history.html I do not know, at the moment, where you could legally buy old releases of AutoCAD such as r14. AutoDesk is very protective of the software it sold you a "license" to use. Just curious...where are you located?
steve klossing
I am a retired ME living in North Ga. I use autocad in the winter time to draw up plans on projects for work in the summer. Some of the projects range from a wooden hutch for my wife to an alum. street luge for my son. I use the 3D feature to check fit, form and fuction of the projects. ReMark
Once in awhile I've come across versions of AutoCAD for sale on eBay and on craigslist. I can't recall seeing anything older than AutoCAD 2000 for sale. Early releases on 5.25" floppies I think would be pretty rare (assuming they haven't devolved magnectically). The problems with buying your software this way are twofold. First is the fact that AutoDesk frowns on people/companies reselling their software. AD's viewpoint is they sold you a "license for use". Second is even if you do come across software for sale how can you be 100% sure it is not a copy or that it will even work. "Buyer beware" cannot be stressed strongly enough. Since you use the software for your own pleasure why not consider some of the free or low cost AutoCAD alternatives. A couple are remarkably similar to AutoCAD. steve klossing
Where might I look for some of these alternativews? I have looked on ebay and found two items. Both we listed as new with licenses,s/n and all material needed. They were Rel. 14 and Rel. 2000. would both of them work on my os, which is windows xp home edition ? ReMark
Other low cost programs include: Bricscad DoubleCAD FreeCAD IntelliCAD ViaCAD ZwCAD If you go with Bricscad there is even a free PDF eBook explaining the differences and similarities between AutoCAD and Bricscad available at the software manufacturer's website. ReMark
Windows XP Home minimum specs (partial list): Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended) At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended) At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk Can you believe it? Makes me laugh to think about it and now we routinely recommended 4 to 8GB (Gigabytes!) like it was nothing. LOL
ReMark
AutoDesk recommended specs for AutoCAD 2000: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112&id=2865811&linkID=9240617 Tankman: AD recommends the exact mim/max RAM numbers as Microsoft does for XP Home! Ain't that a hoot! Looks like the OP's system is going to be "OK as is".
ReMark
I have looked on ebay and found two items....They were Rel. 14 and Rel. 2000. Would both of them work on my os, which is Windows XP Home Edition ? You might have a problem with r14 and XP. No problem with 2000 and XP that I am aware of. If you buy off eBay ask the seller if he will take back the software and refund your money if you cannot successfully load the program. As I recall, unlike the newer software, r14 and 2000 only required the user to input two pieces of information: a serial number and a CD key. The serial number consists of three digits and then another eight digits separated by a dash. The CD key, if I recall correctly, consisted of six letters. Verify with the seller the consistency of this information. You get my point?
ReMark
FYI - At some point, just like Microsoft, AutoDesk switched to an online verification and authorization system. The user inputs a serial number when loading the software. Upon startup AutoCAD will want to connect to the Internet to get an authorization code downloaded from AutoDesk. The AD database verifies that the software is legal then downloads the code. The program is recognized as "registered". Without the code the program will function normally for 30 days then lock out the user until they call and obtain an authorization code from AutoDesk. f700es
DoubleCAD XT - http://www.doublecad.com/Products/DoubleCADXT/tabid/1100/Default.aspx Looks and works very similar to AutoCAD and it's free! No solid modeling though but a very good 2D program.
